Concept of Backlinks

Webmasters aim to get high-quality backlinks because they are necessary for organic search engine ranking. They influence the position of your website on search engine result pages (SERPs). Backlinks are also called inbound links or referring links. If you own or manage a website, building backlinks is one way to have a Search Engine optimized site with high-traffic rate.

What are Backlinks?

Backlinks are links on a website that direct users to another website. Ie. They are incoming links to a webpage. They represent “votes” from other websites, these votes show search engines how valuable your website is. The more backlinks a website has, the higher it ranks on search engines.

9 Important Backlink Terms

If you are just getting started with backlinks, here are 9 key terms you should know:

  • Anchor Text

An anchor text is a text that embeds the where the URL (link to a website) within the content. I.e the hyperlinked text. They help when you want to target specific keywords.

  • Directories

These are websites that contain lists of other websites and have backlinks to them. Although some of them are spammy, others can be helpful with helping your website rank and directing traffic to your site.

  • Internal Links

Internal links are for pages within the same domain. Ie. They connect different pages within the same website.

  • External Links

As the name implies, external links connect to a website from another website. They are either “do follow” or “no follow” backlinks.

  • No follow link

A “no follow” backlink is not enlisted by search engine web crawlers. Therefore, they do not connect the linking website to the linked site and contribute very little to your backlink profile.

  • Do follow link

With “do follow” backlinks, search engines can make a connection between the referring domain and the linked site. Do the following links affect search engine rankings and will help boost your site’s ranking on search engines.

  • Link Juice

Link Juice is a common backlinking slang that refers to the authority a backlink passes to another site. It builds up your site’s backlink profile by giving a signal each time another site links to yours.

  • Low-quality links

These links come from sites that are not regarded as credible - spam sites, automated sites, harvested sites, and the like. Low-quality links will do more harm to your rank performance.

  • High-quality links

These are backlinks that come from websites of high quality. Backlinks from websites with high domain authority are considered high-quality links. High-quality backlinks boost your organic traffic by making your site rank higher on SERPs. This is because the authority website sends a signal that the linked webpage is valuable and should be treated as such.

Other Features Of High Quality Backlinks Include:

  • They include target keywords in the anchor text

  • They come from sites within the same industry/niche

  • They are “do follow” links

  • They are not broken links

  • They come from a domain that has not linked to the site before

An important thing to note about backlinks is that the number of referring domains contributes more to your backlink profile (the combination of backlinks to your site) when compared to the number of backlinks to your site.
